Experiences like these are often connected to what many spiritual and intuitive traditions refer to as the Clair senses.
The word clair comes from French and means “clear.” The Clair senses describe different ways intuitive information may be perceived beyond the traditional five physical senses. While these experiences are often associated with spirituality or psychic development, many people discover they’ve been using intuitive perception naturally their entire lives without realizing it.
Below is an introduction to some of the most commonly discussed Clair senses and how they may show up in everyday life.
Clairvoyance — Clear Seeing
Clairvoyance refers to receiving intuitive information visually. Contrary to popular portrayals, this doesn’t always mean dramatic visions or seeing spirits. More often, it appears as subtle mental imagery, symbols, flashes of insight, vivid dreams, or strong visualization.
People with strong clairvoyant tendencies may:
- Think in pictures
- Receive symbolic imagery during meditation
- Experience meaningful dreams
- Visualize outcomes or scenarios intuitively
- Notice colors, lights, or energetic impressions
Clairvoyance is often closely connected to creativity and imagination. Sometimes intuition communicates through symbolic language rather than literal images.

Clairaudience — Clear Hearing
Clairaudience is the ability to receive intuitive impressions through sound or inner hearing. This may include words, phrases, music, names, tones, or guidance that seems to arrive spontaneously.
For many people, clairaudience feels less like an external voice and more like an internal thought that carries a distinct clarity or energy.
This may show up as:
- Hearing meaningful song lyrics at the perfect time
- Repeated phrases or words catching your attention
- Sudden thoughts that feel guided or insightful
- Strong sensitivity to tone or vibration
- Receiving intuitive messages through spoken language
Some people naturally process the world through sound and communication, making this Clair sense feel especially familiar.

Clairsentience — Clear Feeling
Clairsentience involves sensing energy emotionally or physically through the body. This is one of the most commonly recognized intuitive experiences, especially among empaths and highly sensitive people.
People with strong clairsentient abilities often:
- Instantly feel the energy of a room
- Absorb emotions from others
- Experience gut feelings or strong instincts
- Notice physical sensations tied to situations or people
- Sense tension, excitement, or heaviness energetically
Clairsentience can be incredibly insightful, but it also highlights the importance of grounding, boundaries, and emotional awareness. Learning to distinguish between your own emotions and what you may be sensing externally can become an important part of spiritual growth.

Claircognizance — Clear Knowing
Claircognizance is the experience of simply knowing something without logical explanation or prior information. This intuitive knowing often arrives suddenly and completely.
People experiencing claircognizance may:
- Have spontaneous insights or realizations
- Know outcomes before they happen
- Receive ideas fully formed
- Feel certainty without understanding why
- Instinctively understand situations or people
This Clair sense can sometimes be difficult to trust because it does not always come with evidence or explanation. Many people dismiss these experiences initially, only to later recognize how accurate their intuition had been.

Additional Clair Senses
Beyond the four primary Clair senses, there are several additional forms of intuitive perception that some people experience.
Clairalience / Clairolfaction — Clear Smelling
Perceiving scents without a physical source, such as perfume, flowers, smoke, or familiar smells connected to memories or loved ones.
Clairgustance — Clear Tasting
Experiencing a taste in the mouth intuitively without eating or drinking anything.
Clairtangency — Clear Touching
Also known as psychometry, this involves receiving impressions or information through touching objects or spaces.
Clairempathy — Clear Emotional Feeling
A heightened emotional sensitivity that involves deeply sensing or absorbing the emotional states of others.
These experiences often overlap, and many people find they resonate with more than one Clair sense.

Everyone Experiences Intuition Differently
One of the most important things to remember is that there is no “correct” way to experience intuition.
For some people, intuitive experiences are vivid and immediate. For others, they are subtle, quiet, and easy to overlook. Intuition may strengthen over time through mindfulness, reflection, creativity, meditation, grounding practices, and simply learning to trust yourself more deeply.
Exploring the Clair senses isn’t necessarily about becoming psychic or extraordinary. Often, it’s about becoming more aware of how you naturally process energy, insight, emotions, and inner guidance.
You do not need to have all the answers to begin exploring intuition. Curiosity, openness, and discernment are often the best place to start.
